There was much hoopla last month when Ford Motor Co. announced it would
add 1,000 jobs in Michigan to build advanced batteries and add two vehicles to its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne.
But you can subtract 900 Michigan jobs from that total.
Ford said Tuesday that it will eliminate one shift and
lay off 900 workers at its AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock in July. That's a result of declining sales of the Ford Mustang and Mazda6 built at the plant.
The layoffs are an unfortunate reminder that Michigan cannot depend on the auto industry for significant job growth. Auto manufacturing will continue to be an important segment of the state's economy, but it won't be a generator of many high-paying, middle-class jobs.
I'm waiting for the day when most Michigan residents believe that and I don't have to write it anymore.
